Alena Marková in the book „Belarus. On the Way to Freedom“

Dr Alena Marková was put on the list of the most influential people among the political, artistic, and intellectual elites that produce a long-term impact on the contemporary political, literary and academic discourse on Belarus. Her extensive, partially biographical interview about the current situation in Belarus was published in the book entitled „Belarus. On the Way to Freedom“ (Dražanová, A. – Šupová, T., Bělorusko. Na cestě ke svobodě, Praha: Zlin, 2021.).

The series of interviews with personalities from Belarus and the Czech Republic were conducted by the journalists Adéla Dražanová and Tereza Šupová. Among other respondents there were the Belarus opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the dissident Ales Bialiatski, the Belarusian and Czech journalists Iryna Chalip and Petra Procházková, the writer Max Ščur and other figures.



Dr. Alena Marková is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Historical Sciences of the Faculty of Humanities, Charles University. Her main research interests cover history of Belarus and Eastern Europe, processes of nation-building and national identity-formation. Dr Marková is a main grantee and a project coordinator of many Czech and international academic projects (4EU+ Alliance, GAČR, SVV CU, TRANS MZV ČR and others). She is an Associate Editor of „The Journal of Belarusian Studies“ (BRILL). Alena Marková is the editor and the author of „History of Belarus“ (Prague 2021). Marková’s book “The Road Toward Soviet Nation. Nationality Policy of Belarussization, 1924-1929” (“Šliach da savieckaj nacyji. Palityka bielarusizacyji, 1924-1929”, Minsk 2016) received the best historical monograph of the year 2016 award in Belarusian studies by the expert council of the International Congress of Belarusian Studies (Warsaw).
