Expertise and Field of Specialization:

I am interested in understanding science and technology not simply as a growing stock of knowledge, but as a practice which is social in itself, and is situated in a broader social context. The key context for my analyses is the modernization of European societies. My first-hand research experience covers the history of social sciences humanities in a number of European countries over the course of the 20th century. I also have many years of experience as an analyst of information and communications (ICT) markets in the EMEA region.

Michael Voříšek: The Reform Generation: 1960s Czechoslovak sociology from a comparative perspective, ISBN: 978-80-7017-166-0. 366 pp., Praha: Nakladatelství Kalich 2012.

The book offers an insight into the sudden rise of Marxist sociology in 1960s Czechoslovakia, followed by a no less sudden disappearance of this particular kind of sociology after the Soviet and allied invasion of August 1968. It does so by comparing the Czechoslovak developments with those in other countries of Soviet Bloc in Europe - especially Poland, Romania, Soviet Union, and Yugoslavia, but also others - and to a limited degree also elsewhere in Europe. In Czechoslovakia, it focuses on a cohort of Marxist scholars who dominated the discipline: the 'Reform Generation', intimately connected to the reformist wing of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia.
